Windows 7 Action Center - How to Respond, Customize or Disable the Action Center?


Windows 7 Action Center is a one stop place where you can find system maintenance information, security information and also troubleshoot computer problems if any.

The Action Center contains messages that have been sent to you from Windows and other programs that, at least from the viewpoint of the program, you need to respond to.

When a message is sent to you by a program, a flag with a red X appears in the notification area (as shown below).

You can change how the Action Center informs you of an alert message or even disable this feature. The following show you how to do that.


To respond to the Windows 7 action center

  • Click the notification area Action Center flag to open the Action Center jump list.

  • From the window open, click any option on the jump list to go directly to the window or dialog box, where you can view the message and possibly take corrective actions.
  • OR
  • From the window open, click Open Action Center to review recent messages and resolve problems.
  • Click the relevant item to address the issue, and when you are ready, close the Action Center.


To change the Windows 7 action center settings

  • Click the notification area Action Center flag to open the Action Center jump list.
  • From the window open, click Open Action Center.

  • As you can see, the Action Center addresses two categories: Security and Maintenance.
  • If you click the Security link, you are presented with all of the needed security information, problems and the options to troubleshoot. Click Back button to go back.
  • If you click the Maintenance link, you can find information related to their system maintenance like system backup, check solutions to problem, etc. Click Back button to go back.
  • From the Action Center dialog box displayed, click Change Action Center settings in the left-hand side of the screen.

  • From the Change Action Center settings dialog box, select the security and maintenance messages you want to see.
  • When finish, click OK and close the Action Center dialog box.


To disable the Action Center

  • Right-click on empty space on the System Tray and from the menu pop-up, click Properties.

  • From the System Icons dialog box displayed, you can choose to turn on or off the Action Center.
  • Click the Customize notification icons link to select the behavior of other tray notifications individually.
  • When finish, click OK.
