"Windows 7 Networking - Guide to Connecting Computers Together!"

Windows 7 networking functions provide the software for a computer to access other computers and, separately, for other computers to access the computer you are working on.

In other words, the two primary functions allow the computer to be a client (it accesses other computers) and to be a server (other computers access it).

Whether you are physically connected using a network cable or connected remotely using a dial-up or cable modem, you can connect securely to a network over the Internet using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.

To enable Windows 7 networking functions

  • Click Start and click Control Panel.
  • In Category view, click Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center.
  • From the Network and Sharing Center window displayed, under the View your active networks section, click Local Area Connection in the middle-right area.
  • Windows 7 local area connection status dialog box

  • From the Local Area Connection Status dialog box displayed, it shown that the computer is connected to the network and that it is sending and receiving data, which indicates it is correctly set up.
  • Click Properties button.
  • Windows 7 local area connection properties dialog box

  • From the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box displayed, it appears and displays the services and protocols that have been installed automatically.
  • The minimum services needed for Windows 7 networking are:
  • - Client for Microsoft Networks
    - File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and
    - Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

  • Click Install button.
  • select network feature type dialog box

  • From the Select Network Feature Type dialog box displayed, you can add clients, services, and protocols. The following show you how to install that.

To install a client

  • From the Select Network Feature Type dialog box displayed, double-click on Client.
  • If you already have Client for Microsoft Networks installed, you will not have any services to install. The select Network Client box is empty.
  • If Client for Microsoft Networks is not installed, select it and click OK.

To install a service

  • From the Select Network Feature Type dialog box, double-click on Service.
  • If you already have File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and QoS Packet Scheduler installed, you will not have any services to install. The select Network Service box is empty.
  • If File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and QoS Packet Scheduler are not installed, select them and click OK.

Windows 7 provides two services, both of which are automatically installed:
- File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks handles the sharing of resources on your computer.
- QoS (Quality of Service) Packet Scheduler helps balance a network and alleviate bottlenecks when one part of the network is fast and another part is slow.
