Before I recommend some of the FREE firewall software that you can use, here are some of the important tips that you needs to be aware:

• Before installing personal firewall software on a Windows XP or Vista computer, be sure that the firewall built into the Windows operating system is turned off.
• Try NOT to use two firewalls software at the same time. You can remove the previous one before installing the new one.
• However, you can use a hardware firewall with the software firewall installed.
• Once the firewall software was installed, always check the vendor's website for patches and updates.
