Windows 7 System Requirements: The Minimum Requirements to Install Windows 7

Do you know the Windows 7 system requirements?

Well, if you are planning to install either a clean copy or upgrade to Windows 7 from the existing Windows it's crucial for you to know the minimum requirements first.

If you are currently running Windows Vista, the good news is that you are ready for Windows 7. Tests performed by various parties have consistently confirmed that Windows 7 outperformed Windows Vista on a similar hardware configuration.

If you are coming from previous versions of Windows (pre-Vista), take note of the following suggested hardware requirements:

  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit or 64-bit processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (for 32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (for 64-bit)
  • 16 GB of available hard disk space (for 32-bit) or 20 GB of available hard disk space (for 64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with Windows Display Driver Model 1.0 or higher (for Aero-the graphical user interface and default theme in most editions of Windows 7)
  • DVD-ROM/RW drive

Those who plan to run Windows XP Mode on Windows 7 will need at least 2 GB RAM, 15 GB of additional hard drive space and a processor that supports hardware virtualization.

Note: The suggested requirements are necessary to experience all the features of Windows 7 (such as Aero Glass effects), but Windows 7 will still function on lesser hardware.

Obviously, more is better, so it's a good idea to exceed these requirements when running multiple heavy duties tasks.

If you are not sure your computer specifications, here it's:

  • Right-click on My Computer (in Windows XP) and from the menu pop-up, click Properties.
  • From the System Properties dialog box displayed, the processor and RAM information is display there.
